I wrote this in 2002, on the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. I had moved to Brooklyn mere months earlier, and was doing temp jobs all over town, many of which were in close proximity to what was still a steaming tower of debris in the financial district. The mood was tense, Afghanistan in the headlines, the Iraq War (which I would protest vehemently) still on the horizon, and I thought the 22nd anniversary would be a good time to remember the mood of that era.
